Small signs throughout the ITC grounds and Besant Hall provide brief descriptions of notable places and objects. Further information is available here.
The Garden of Remembrance was established in the 1930s to honor Annie Besant (1847–1933), without whom the ITC would not have existed. A memorial stone with her name was placed in the garden. After the passing of Rukmini Devi Arundale (1904–1986) a memorial stone was added here for Rukmini. During her 52 years as Head of the International Theosophical Centre, she guided its growth and development with dedication and deep spiritual insight.
The Garden was planted on the site of a large LCC church, which was built in 1927 but burnt down shortly after its consecration. Designed in 1937 and largely replanted in 2020, it was then consecrated by two priests of the LCC together with children of the Round Table. Its special design is visible in the positioning of the trees, the circle, the rose-in-the-cross at the centre, and the pond.
For many, this is one of the most potent places on the estate. You are welcome to enter and meditate here.
